The word “radio” is practically a curse word in 2013.  No one admits to liking the radio, and it’s probably because nobody does anymore. The over-commercialized, steaming loads of aural crap broadcasted over FM frequencies should be stopped by our government, that is unless you are talking about a nice local station like WPRK 91.5, a Rollins College radio station. “I think WPRK is the last stand right now in creatively free radio; with its on-air DJs/Radio personalities and variety of programs,” said Will Castro, the host of WPRK’s UNDERGROUND RHYTHM DISTRICT Show.

While other stations are busy jamming “music” down your throat in a 1:1 recipe with Viagra commercials, WPRK is cooking up intriguing playlists that range from punk rock to techno, all constructed according to the tastes of real people who really like music.  “[WPRK] contributes something different in contrast to the mundane and overly commercialized content featured by other radio stations. WPRK is not afraid to go against the grain, and when it comes to music, this station will play the music other radio stations are too afraid to play,” said Castro.  The willingness to go against the grain is WPRK’s ace-in-the-hole. They pride themselves on being different and refusing to conform to generic radio formats.

It is rare that a singular persons music tastes will agree with everything that the Rollins College radio station plays, but new music, fresh sounds and a unique perspective on radio are guaranteed to coincide with anyone who is passionate about music.  “I believe showcasing variety is a good way to expose people to a wider range of possibilities in terms of musical taste and ideas–I think it helps in giving an audience a more thoughtful and appreciative perspective on those two things,” said Castro.
