What is better than a small, locally owned eatery that serves fresh and delicious Cuban food at great prices? How about two of them! That’s right. Black Bean Deli, Winter Park’s best Cuban food stop is expanding into the Mills 50 area.
Black Bean Deli (or BBD as the cool kids call it) has been serving great Cuban cuisine for years on Orlando Ave. and is now moving on up to the East side. The second BBD will be located right on Colonial Drive, just east of Fern Creek Ave. and will be open by mid-September
If you are not familiar with Black Bean’s tasty work you have been missing out. Black Bean’s menu is not huge. It has three main categories: sandwiches, platters and sides. That’s about it. But the few things they do, they do really well.
If you are in the mood for a sandwich, the Cuban ($6.25) is always a great choice. Good portions of ham, pork, cheese, pickles and mustard melt together inside perfectly toasted fresh Cuban bread and make you understand why the Orlando Weekly magazine, in their Best of 2013, said this dining spot has the best Latin cuisine in town.
Awesome Cuban food at BBD
If you are looking for something a little heartier than look no further than one of Black Bean’s generous platters. For less than nine dollars at Black Bean you get a to-go container that feels like it weighs about 10 lbs. Daily specials include Ropa Vieja (shredded beef cooked in a wine and tomato sauce) and mojo pork among other delicious options. My favorite is the white meat chicken platter ($8.50). It includes a two delicious roasted chicken breasts, about a half dozen fried sweet plantains, rice, black beans and a small garden salad that is served with an awesome avocado ranch dressing on the side.
The Black Bean Deli experience is completed with a few choices for dessert. Options include traditional Cuban sweets like tres leches ($2.50), different varieties of flan ($2.50) or one of their authentic Cuban pastries (or “pastelitos”) filled with guava ($1).
Black Bean Deli’s affordable and delicious way of doing things has made them a success in Winter Park. With that same recipe, they should fit right in on Colonial drive, in an area of town where few things are more popular than good food at great prices.
